Aswad - Discography (1976-2002)

Aswad is one of the most iconic and successful reggae groups in Britain, with a career spanning over four decades and a discography of 26 albums and numerous singles. The group was formed in 1974 in the Ladbroke Grove area of West London by three friends: Brinsley "Dan" Forde (vocals and rhythm guitar), Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye (vocals and drums), and Tony "Gad" Robinson (bass). They were influenced by the Jamaican roots reggae of Bob Marley, Burning Spear, and Black Uhuru, as well as the British rock and soul scene. Aswad means "black" in Arabic, and the group wanted to express their pride in their African heritage and culture.

Aswad - Discography (1976-2002)

The group's debut album, Aswad, was released in 1976 on Island Records, and showcased their raw and rootsy sound, with songs like "I A Rebel Soul", "Can't Stand The Pressure", and "Ethiopian Rhapsody". The album received critical acclaim, but did not sell well. The group followed up with Hulet in 1979, which featured more polished production and a wider range of musical styles, such as funk, jazz, and dub. The album included the hit single "Back To Africa", which won the group their first British Reggae Award.

In 1981, Aswad released two albums: Aswad Showcase and New Chapter. The former was a dub version of their previous album Hulet, while the latter was a new set of original songs that marked a departure from their roots reggae sound. New Chapter was produced by Michael "Reuben" Campbell, who introduced synthesizers, drum machines, and pop hooks to the group's music. The album was a commercial breakthrough for Aswad, reaching the top 40 of the UK Albums Chart and spawning the singles "Love Fire" and "Finger Gun Style". The album also received critical praise for its innovative fusion of reggae and pop.

A New Chapter of Dub, released in 1982, was a dub remix of New Chapter by producer Mikey Dread. The album was hailed as one of the best dub albums of all time, and influenced many other artists in the genre. The same year, Aswad released Not Satisfied, another album of original songs that continued their pop-oriented direction. The album featured guest appearances by Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Rico Rodriguez, and Michael Rose. The title track was a hit single in the UK.

In 1983, Aswad recorded their first live album, Live & Direct, at the Notting Hill Carnival. The album captured the energy and excitement of their live performances, and included versions of their hits as well as covers of Bob Marley's "Exodus" and Marvin Gaye's "Rockin' After Midnight". The album was a success both commercially and critically, and established Aswad as one of the best live acts in reggae.

Rebel Souls, released in 1984, was another studio album that explored different musical genres, such as soul, funk, rock, and dancehall. The album featured the hit single "Need Your Love (Each And Every Day)", which featured vocals by British soul singer Lorna Gee. The album also included a cover of Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It", which was later sampled by MC Lyte on her song "Poor Georgie".

In 1985, Aswad collaborated with dub pioneer Jah Shaka on the album Jah Shaka Meets Aswad in Addis Ababa Studio. The album was recorded in Ethiopia during a visit to the country by Aswad and Jah Shaka. The album blended traditional Ethiopian music with reggae and dub, creating a unique sound that reflected the spiritual connection between Africa and Jamaica.

To The Top, released in 1986 on Simba Records, was another pop-oriented album that featured guest appearances by David Grant, Maxi Priest

In 1988, Aswad released their most successful album, Distant Thunder, on Mango Records. The album featured the number one single "Don't Turn Around", a cover of a Tina Turner B-side that was previously a hit for Swedish pop group Ace of Base. The album also included the hits "Give A Little Love" and "Set Them Free". The album showcased Aswad's ability to blend reggae with pop, soul, and R&B, and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album.

Too Wicked, released in 1990, was another pop-reggae album that featured collaborations with Sly & Robbie, David Hinds of Steel Pulse, and Dennis Brown. The album included the singles "Next To You", "Smile", and "On And On". The latter was a cover of a song by Curtis Mayfield that was used as the theme song for the British sitcom Birds of a Feather. The album also featured a cover of The Police's "Invisible Sun", which was recorded with Sting.

In 1993, Aswad signed with Island Records and released Firesticks, an album that returned to their roots reggae sound. The album featured guest appearances by Michael Rose, Shabba Ranks, Yazz, and Brinsley Forde's son Shyam. The album included the singles "How Long", "Fire", and "Shine". The latter was a remix by Beatmasters that became Aswad's second number one hit in the UK in 1994.

Rise And Shine, released in 1994 on Rhino Records, was another roots reggae album that featured guest appearances by Luciano, Beenie Man, and Bitty McLean. The album included the singles "Warriors", "Day By Day", and "You're No Good". The latter was a cover of a song by Betty Everett that was previously a hit for Linda Ronstadt. The album also featured a cover of Bob Marley's "Natural Mystic".

Rise And Shine Again!, released in 1995 on Mesa Records, was a reissue of Rise And Shine with four new tracks: "Heartbeat", "World Of Confusion", "Pickin' Up", and "Oh Jah". In 2002, Aswad released their last studio album to date, Cool Summer Reggae, on Universal Records. The album was a collection of covers of summer-themed songs by artists such as Bob Marley, UB40, Jimmy Cliff,

Aswad continued their pop-reggae success in the 1990s, releasing albums such as Cool Summer Reggae (2002), which featured covers of summer-themed songs by artists such as Bob Marley, UB40, Jimmy Cliff, and Inner Circle. The album included the singles "Shining Star", "Night Nurse", and "Sweat". The album also featured a cover of Sting's "Englishman In New York", which was recorded with Sting himself.

Aswad also collaborated with many other artists during their career, such as Michael Jackson, Janet Kay, Chaka Khan, Ali Campbell, Dennis Brown, and Sting. They also produced songs for other reggae artists, such as Maxi Priest, Barrington Levy, and Steel Pulse. They also contributed to soundtracks of films such as Babylon (1980), The Mighty Quinn (1989), and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995).
