The 2012 film marks the fourth live-action collaboration between Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm. The two studios previously collaborated on Big Hero 6, the short film The Muppets, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.Set in the nation of the United States on a year later of Pearl Harbor, the film tells the story of a group of Americans in the service of the United States military during World War II and their exploits in the skies over Europe and the Pacific. An African-American pilot named Dusty "Dusty Dog" Moxley (Martin Henderson) spends his days as a mechanic on the Avenger aircraft of the 89th "Red Tails" Fighter Squadron, a group of African-American pilots trained by the United States government for its World War II against Germany and Japan.As the American war effort begins to falter in the autumn of 1942, Dusty convinces his squadron's commander, Major Carmichael "Carrie" Anderson (Terrence Howard) to seize the opportunity to win the war with a daring mission.The ensuing mission is perhaps the most famous Red Tails flight of all, when the squadron mates with a ragtag force of British Royal Air Force pilots and their Spitfire aircraft seeking to replace their own lost aircraft.The film features cameo appearances by individuals who have served as extras on Star Wars, including Mark Hamill as a voice of the AT-AT.' Red Tails was theatrically released in the United States on August 16, 2012, in 2D and 3D, in 750 theaters, grossing over $5 million in its initial weekend.The film has received mostly positive reviews from critics and grossed $122 million worldwide against a budget of $120 million.
