Skim reading is only acceptable when paired with active reading strategies. This integration provides a balanced learning experience so the student can develop an understanding of the key concepts taught in a lesson through two kinds of reading: scanning to get an overview then active reading to seek out details. Skim reading is most often done in elementary school to go over basic chapters in a textbook. It is best to skip straight over the complicated math formulas in a math textbook, or the long quotes from a long novel. However, if you do not understand a basic formula, try to figure out how it is used before continuing to the next chapter.


Close reading and reading comprehension are the same thing. Research studies, even those that measure different things, cannot separate the two types of reading. The best way to teach reading comprehension is to teach close reading, and the best way to teach close reading is to teach reading comprehension.


In the case of a normal-sized book, you should be able to turn to the page numbers that correspond to the last thing you have read. If you cannot remember which page that is, you can always use the pencil or rubber to mark the chapters that you are reading. It is a good habit to mark the current chapter as you are reading it. Reading by page number may help if the book does not have page numbers. You can read by time, reading chapter 12, for example, one page at a time. You can also use the chapters in the book as a guide to reading by a blend of page and time reading.


After reading a story or chapter, students often make a written summary of the information, what they learned from this source, and what they could not learn from it. This copy-writing exercise forces students to think about the purpose of using report writing in a lesson or how they could use it in a writing assignment. This type of formative feedback will help students to make informed judgments about the amount of information they have learned from the source.
